Archangellos

The village of Archangellos was formerly called Varvaro (until 1950) and that was its name in 961 AD, when the soldiers of Nikiforos Fokas settled there. It is about 35 km from Heraklion and only 1.5 km from Kastelli. The village retains remnants of traditional architectural elements and among other you can see a stone olive press.

The residents are currently occupied with agriculture and mainly with the production of oil and wine products as well as livestock. The village is worth visiting on November 8, when the central church of the Archangel Michael celebrates and a traditional festival is organized.
