Dam of Ini
The dam of Ini – Maheras is located 38 kilometers south of Heraklion and next to the settlements of Ini and Maheras respectively. It was constructed in 2004 and it has a capacity of 1.75 cubic meters. Water mills in the area indicate the relationship of the place with water, resulting in a tradition of processing local goods through the use of water.
The lake has attracted a large number of birds and it has been developed into an important wetland in Crete. It has a significant contribution to biodiversity, a parallel benefit beyond the utilitarian needs that it aims to cover. The Cultural Associations of the surrounding settlements, taking into account the importance of the wetland and the beauty of the area, organize events in the lake, such as rowing races.
