Karouzano
The settlements of Upper and Lower Karouzano are 40 kilometers from the city of Heraklion and 4 km from Kastelli. They were first reported by Charmouzis Byzantios in 1842.
In the settlement of Upper Karouzano, remains of the past appear to be conserved to some extent. You can see the ruins of a 19th century factory from the Turkish period, while the church of St. Savvas, which is inside the settlement, dates from the same century. The traditional character of Lower Karouzano is equally interesting. A number of watermills exist in the area, some of which are in a good condition.
