Skinias

The quite large settlement of Skinias is located 51 kilometers from Heraklion, at an altitude of 210 meters. The place name is considered to derive from the name of a low shrub which is called “Shinos” or “Skinos” in Crete The existence of the plant is said to be traditionally associated with the tragic periods in the history of the place.
So, under unfortunate circumstances and events, the plant Skinos withers, whereas it comes back to normal with their removal. This exact behaviour is depicted by the residents on the roof of the church of Agios Antonios (St. Anthony).

Skinias is an ideal destination for nature lovers, as it offers excellent opportunities for hikes and excursions in nature. South of the settlement lies the Gorge of Anapodaris, one of the most popular gorges of the Perfecture, known for its rare natural beauty. The reservoir of the settlement, 1 km. north of it, is also very beautiful offering the chance for relaxing walks.
