The place name is considered to derive from the name of a low shrub which is called “Shinos” or “Skinos” in Crete The existence of the plant is said to be traditionally associated with the tragic periods in the history of the place. So, under unfortunate circumstances and events, the plant Skinos withers, whereas it comes back to normal with their removal. This exact behaviour is depicted by the residents on the roof of the church of Agios Antonios (St. Anthony).
