The Shooting Club of Arkalohori was founded in 1996 by a small group of friends who loved guns and shooting. Through many difficulties, this club has become popular among people of the town of Arkalochori, and today it numbers over 550 members and weapons of all kinds. With great effort and work it has become one of the largest shooting clubs in Crete and it has members from all the Prefecture of Heraklion.

Nowadays the Shooting Club Of Arkalohori is involved in all kinds of shooting. It has formed groups for shooting practice and groups of target shooting both of large caliber and small caliber. When it was founded, the shooting range of the Officers’ School of Infantry was used for training and competitions. An area of 8 acres (which is 22 km from the city of Heraklion and 4 km from the town of Arkalohori) was later granted to the Club by the former Municipality of Arkalochori and all the activities of the Shooting Club were moved there. In July 2004 the first authorization of the site was granted by the Secretary General of the Region of Crete and it has been renewed every year since then.
