Voulgaro or Vourgaro

One kilometer from the village Karavados and about 38 from Heraklion, on the southeast of the Prefecture of Heraklion lied the Venetian settlement Voulgaro or Vourgaro. The site where it was located is called “Katalymata”, because of the remaining ruins. The place name comes from the installation of Bulgarian soldiers during the period of Nikiforos Fokas, after their takeover of Crete in 961 AD.
