Evaggelismos (The Annunciation)
The village of Evangelismos is located 35 km from Heraklion and west of Kastelli on a low hill. It formerly had the name Muhtari or Muktari. The inhabitants are engaged in agriculture, producing raisins, olive oil, wine and cereals.
The plain of Evaggelismos has been inhabited by smaller and larger populations during the Minoan period and a lot of Byzantine monuments have survived in the area, such as the Church of the Annunciation with frescoes of the 14th century and a carved iconostasis of the 19th century.
Today the village of Evaggelismos is very picturesque. It maintains its traditional architectural elements. You can see beautiful stone houses and houses with a clear neoclassical influence.
