Stironas

Located about 29 km from Heraklion, at an altitude of 550 meters lies Stironas, a village with significant agricultural production. In 1900 this settlement was inhabited exclusively by Turks, so on their leaving refugees were settled there. In 1924 the village was massively inhabited by refugees, who came from Iconium in Asia Minor after the population exchange.

Stironas is best known today for the traditional Raki distillery “Myragapi”, located in the southwestern boundary of the village. Inside the village, it is worth visiting the late Byzantinechurchof Holy Mary, which, according to tradition, has the famous miraculous iconof the Virgin Mary.
